Whips is a song remembering the history of slavery to confront racism and oppression today. It remembers how a privileged class of people failed to notice or care that their world was built on a cotton industry that ripped children from mothers, placed slaves in coffles, and developed new innovations in the use of whips and torture to extract maximum work out of slaves.

Clothing from cloth of calico cotton
It ruled the world, economy grand
And those who could,
ignored what the cost was
On souls of slaves they sold for their hands
Hold this remembrance in the breaking of bread
For the poor and the captive,
for those now oppressed

A wailing mother,
a baby stolen
Blood from whips that tear the flesh
For cotton growin’

Now on a scale, the slave hangs his cotton
All these two hands could pick in one day
And every night, still more is demanded
Then when he fails, with blood, he does pay
